Vanilla originates from Mexico, where the Aztecs used it to soften the bitterness of chocolate. Many European attempts were made to cultivate vanilla pods outside their native region. Louis XIV became fascinated by vanilla and wanted to grow it on Bourbon Island, now Réunion. However, every attempt during his reign failed, as no one understood how to pollinate vanilla outside its natural habitat.
Europeans did not know that the Mexican Melipona bee was responsible for pollination. Thanks to this bee, the orchid produces the long green fruit commonly known as the vanilla pod. Gourmand and suave, Melipona is a fragrance that opens elegantly with woody and vanilla notes, gradually revealing warm oriental and amber facets in the base.
